How to Crochet - Granny Square

Hello my lovelies! Welcome back to my blog. We've completed the beginners lessons. You can find them here in case you haven't seen them.

Today we'll be looking at one of the most cmmon patterns in crochet - The Granny Square. It's worked in the round, and is made up of blocks and spaces. Let's get to making the granny square.

I'm using Laura Knitting Cotton, it's a 3ply cotton yarn, along with a 4.50mm hook.

Chain 4, slip stitch into the 4th chain from the hook to form a loop.

Now we're ready to begin Row 1. Ch 4 & 3 dc into the chain loop.

[Ch 2 & 3 dc into the chain loop] 2 times. Make a ch 2

Make 2 dc into the chain loop

Now slip stitch into the chain 4 loop we made at the beginning of Row 1.

We've completed row 1. We have 4 blocks [3dc] & 4 corners [ch 2 spaces].

Row 2 - Ch4, and make 3 dc into the same ch 4 loop we just slip stitched into, and ch 1

Into the next corner, make 3 dc, ch2, 3 dc.

Make [ch1, "3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc" into the next corner] twice. Ch 1.

Make 2 dc into the ch 4 space in the previous row [where we made the 3 dc in the beginning of this row].

Slip stitch into the ch 4 space we made in the beginning of row 2.

We've now completed row 2. On each side, we have 2 blocks, and a ch 1 space. And 4 corners. This is the basic formla for a granny square. Each block is 3 dc, on the sides the space is a ch1, and the corners are a ch 2.

Let's make Row 3. Chain 4 & 3 dc into the ch 4 loop we just slip stitched into, and make a ch 1.

Make "3 dc & ch 1" in each ch 1 space. And "3 dc , ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1" in each corner.

When you reach the end of the row, make 2 dc into the ch 4 loop in the previous row [where we we made the first 3 dc]

Slip stitch into the ch 4 we made in the beginning of this row.

Keep repeating row 3 as long as you want to. The granny square is one of those very repetitive patterns. Once you master it, you needn't even look down at your work!!
