Single Crochet Increase & Decrease

In this lesson you will learn how to make a Single Crochet Increase [sc inc] & Single Crochet Decrease [sc dec]. If you do not know how to make a Single Crochet check out this tutorial first.

Let us first look at the increse. I have here with me a row of 7 sc's.

The increase is relatively easy, we just need to make more than one stitch in the same place.

Step 1 ~ make an sc in the first sc as you would normally.

Step 2 ~ instead of inserting the hook into the next stitch, insert it in the same stitch where we just made an sc.

Step 3 ~ make a second sc in the same stitch.

Keep working 2sc in each stitch till the end of the row.  This is how your piece should look at the end of the row.

Notice how it has bent like the rainbow? That's because row 2 has twice the number of stitches as row 1.

Let us now go on to the Single Crochet Decrease. The decrease is worked a little differently. I have here with me a row of 8 sc's.

Step 1 ~ pull up a loop through the first stitch. Do not complete the stitch.

Step 2 ~ pull up a loop through the next stitch too. You should have 3 loops on the hook.

Step 3 ~ yo

Step 4 ~ pull through all 3 loops at the same time.

Keep doing this till the end of the row. Your piece should look like this now.

Notice how this has curved in the opposite direction, that's because row 2 has only the half the number of stitches as row 1. This is how we use increases and decreases to shape projects. You will understand this better as you make larger projects.
