Sip Knot & Chain

In this lesson you will learn how to make a slip knot & a chain.
I will be using a 4mm hook with some DK yarn for this tutorial

The beginning of the yarn is called the tail end, and the yarn that comes out of the ball or skein is the working yarn.

Step 1 ~ make a loop with the tail end underneath the working yarn

Step 2 ~ insert the hook into the loop

Step 3 ~ grab the working yarn with the hook

Step 4 ~ pull it up through the loop

Step 5 ~ tighten the knot by pulling on both the ends at the same time

You have just made a slip knot. Initially it will seem quite clumsy, don't worry about that. Keep practising, you'll get it right in no time.

In the picture above, you can see that there is a flat portion on the hook [where the hook size is stamped]. This portion is called the 'Grip' or the 'Thumb rest'. We use that to hold the hook between the thumb and the index fingers.

There are 2 ways of holding the hook. Like a knife...

Or like a pen...

Regardless of how you choose to hold the hook, you must hold it at the grip. This is to ensure that the hook does not rotate upwards while you work on a project.

Now let us see how to make a chain [ch].

Step 1 ~ wrap the yarn from back to from around the hook. This action is called a yarn over [yo].

Step 2 ~ now grab that yarn through the loop on the hook.

We have just made a ch 1. Repeat step 1 & step 2 as many times as required. I have made a ch 11 here.

Note that the loop on the hook, never counts as a stitch.

Keep practising the slip knot and chain, and I will see you in the next lesson where we will learn to make a Single Crochet [sc]. You can find my other tutorials here.
