Half Double Crochet

In this lesson, we will learn how to make the Half Double Crochet or the Hdc. If you have not been through the previous lessons, you can find them here.

I have here with me a ch 9

Step 1 ~ yo

The turning chain for hdc is a ch 2, so we will skip the first 2 chs.

Step 2 ~ insert the hook into the 3rd chain from the hook.

Step 3 ~ yo

Step 4 ~ pull up a loop, we will now have 3 loops on the hook.

Step 5 ~ yo

Step 6 ~ draw through all 3 loops on the hook.

This is how we make the hdc

To start the next row, ch 2 and turn

While starting a new row there are 2 ways of working,
1) ignore the turning chain
2) treat the turning chain as a stitch

If you choose to ignore the turning chain, start working from the very first stitch in row 2. And work till the last stitch.

If you choose to treat the turning chain as a stitch, the turning chain replaces the first stitch. So skip the veru first stitch and begin working from the second one. And when you reach the end of the row, the turning chain of the previous row should also be treated as a stitch, that means, just like the other stitches, make a hdc on top of the turning chain.

I have not included pictures for this step as they will seem confusing. Please check out the video tutorials, where both options have been demonstrated clearly.
