The Yarn Elf

Hi... if you are seeing this page, it can only mean one thing! You have been diagnosed with a serious addiction to yarn!!! Some people might even call you mental for being a yarn hoarder! [psst... there is no such thing as too much yarn!!!]

I started experimenting with dyeing cotton yarn a few years back. My curiosity got the better of me & I kept looking for better dyes & methods to dye them. The experiments continued on... I did a color mixing exercise inspired by Rebecca from ChemKnits. After many months of trying and failing I have finally managed to create yarn that I am proud of. [You can follow my yarn dyeing journey on my YouTube Channel]

ABOUT OUR YARN

The yarns are 100% combed cotton yarn. And the dyes used are color fast, fabric safe dyes that will not cause any irritation or allergies. The yarns are colour fast, a pale run off in forst wash is normal. The yarns are dyed in small lots, and for each lot the dyes are freshly mixed. Even though the same recipe and process is followed, there may be some variations. Therefore, every lot is unique and may not match perfectly with another dye lot. That is not a defect!

Cotton is one of the most difficult fibres to dye. Large scale commercial dyers use chemical processes on the yarns that are commercially available. It is not possible to replicate those processes on a small scale by hand dyers. The way the yarn absorbs the dye is also affected by various factors including the Ph level of the water.

Sometimes, ties put in place to keep the yarn from getting tangled during the dyeing process can create a tie-dyed effect.

But then, even where there is no resistance the dye is absorbed unevenly.

Due to this even the solids will have tonal variations within them, giving them a variegated look. So projects worked with them do not look flat.

Even the multi or variegated colourways are difficult to recreate. Because, like I mentioned earlier,  the same ratios can produce different results. This is the reason why many colourways are sold as limited edition stock. So, while ordering, please make sure you have enough to finish your project, because there are bound to be dye lot differences. Again, that is not a defect. In fact it adds to the beauty of hand-dyed yarn.
